Another reason, often not associated with Christmas, for the hope that is in us is that God always keeps His word. In Isaiah 7:14 we read, “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Even though it seemed impossible for a virgin to conceive, God kept His word when Christ was born.

In Jeremiah 33:14-16, God declared that He would bring forth from the house of Israel and the house of Judah a righteous Branch of David. This Branch would execute judgment and righteousness on the earth. Many people don’t think of this verse when they think of Christmas, but God did not forget His word and fulfilled this promise in Christ.

The Old Testament even alludes to the fact that Christ would also come from Egypt. In Hosea chapter 11 verse 1, we read, “When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.” Some may think that this conflicts with Micah 5:2, which says, “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” However, in both these verses God kept His word without any conflict. As Micah prophesized, Christ was born in Bethlehem. And as Hosea foretold, Matthew 2 tells us that a little later in His life, Christ was called out of Egypt.

Not only does God always keep His word, but He also knows everything, regardless of how inconsequential it may seem to us, or how few of us even consider it. For example, it is commonly known that Christ was born in Bethlehem. However, the significance of why Christ was born in Bethlehem may not be known by most, but it is known by God and was not forgotten. Bethlehem in the Hebrew means “House of Bread”, and what more fitting place is there Christ, who would be known as the Bread of Life, to be born. In addition, the lambs that were offered as a Passover sacrifice came from Bethlehem. There would be no other town that would be more appropriate to provide the sacrificial Lamb of God than Bethlehem, and this fact was not missed by God.

When we consider the meaning of Christmas, let us not forget that part of the Christmas message is the truth that God never forgets His word or His promises. The One who sent His only begotten Son to earth did so at the perfect time and in the perfect way, completely keeping His word and doing so in consideration of every detail of life. Because of this, we can put our complete hope and confidence in God.
bmalik358@gmail.com (Bryan Malik)Mon, 25 Dec 2023 01:20:54 +0000http://campinfinity.com/blog/2023/12/24/when-we-think-about-christmas/Ci Campers Advanced to LEGO League World Championship! http://campinfinity.com/blog/2020/04/26/ci-campers-advanced-lego-league-world-championship/
Our two kids Aiden & Emma Hobson were first introduced to Mindstorm Legos at camp infinity a few years ago. My son especially became obsessed with them and robotics and decided he wanted to form his own lego league team. He and my daughter started a team this past season that consisted of mostly homeschool kids with no other options for a team. They were able to win the regional competition…and against all odds this little rag tag homeschool team then went on to win the Ky State Championship and were invited to compete in the Lego League World Championship in Detroit vs 1400 teams from over 70 countries. Unfortunately the World Championship was canceled due to the COVID issue but we are super proud of them for making it that far and thankful for Camp Infinity for inspiring this love of STEM in them! - Ryan Hobson, Ci Parent

article published in local newspaper
dan@campinfinity.com (Camp Infinity)Sun, 26 Apr 2020 19:18:07 +0000http://campinfinity.com/blog/2020/04/26/ci-campers-advanced-lego-league-world-championship/Camp InfinityRoboticsStoriesWe are pleased to announce our newest member of Ci 6.0 summer staff!! http://campinfinity.com/blog/2019/04/29/ci-pleased-announce-our-newest-member-ci-60-summer-staff/

Here’s what Caleb shared about why he’s excited to teach at Ci this summer.

"I am a senior at Cedarville University, pursuing a degree in Chemistry Education and a minor in Biblical Studies. This news is both exciting and bittersweet, but we trust it is the Lord’s leading and it will be the beginning of an incredible new chapter in the history of Camp Infinity. [READ MORE]

In just a few short months, Ci 6.0 kicks off as we welcome our first group of campers. We’re excited to meet our 2019 campers and thought we’d start the introductions now by letting you get to know our Ci 6.0 counselors. [READ MORE]

A huge part of Ci is our partnership with Answers in Genesis and their two themed attractions, the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter. Much of our camp takes place at the Creation Museum and our overnight camps also tour the nearby Ark Encounter. Since Ci 5.0 some things have changed at both attractions and we looked forward to experiencing these new upgrades with our campers: [READ MORE]

The Creation Museum and Ark Encounter aren’t the only Northern Kentucky attractions to get upgrades. In previous years, Ci has taken campers to the Cincinnati Museum Center, a massive museum located in a beautiful old train station, Union Terminal, in Cincinnati. But in 2016 they closed for renovations, so we have been taking campers to the museum at Big Bone Lick State Park instead. [READ MORE]

For each summer camp we choose a theme to structure our activities around. Each theme must be relevant in terms of STEM and have a direct tie-in to apologetics (faith-defense), biblical worldview, and what’s happening in our culture and in science. We take something that has been grossly misrepresented in our culture through false or inaccurate scientific claims and look at it through the lens of Scripture. [READ MORE]

By Ben Torkelson

A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps. I was in my freshman year of high school. The Apollo program was nearing its climax with the soon to be landing of the Apollo 11 on the lunar surface that summer. Many other circumstances in my life were focusing my attention on the passion for astronomy that I already had. It was a heady time.

And life seemed so much simpler back then. Most households had only one telephone, and it was either attached to a wall in the kitchen or to a cord and was sitting on a table. Of course, we’d all heard of computers, but we’d never actually seen one. If we wanted to look something up, we usually turned to an encyclopedia. We had only one television set in our home, and it wasn’t even color. And it certainly didn’t have a flat screen. And there were only three stations to watch. The complaint then was that there were three stations, but there wasn’t anything worth watching. Now we have 300 stations or more, and there’s still nothing to watch. Now, that’s progress!

Clearly, technology has transformed our lives over the past 50 years. But technology has radically changed the way that we do science, and astronomy is no exception. Back then, it was easy to keep track of what was going on in astronomy. For two decades, the largest optical telescope had been the 200-inch Hale telescope on Palomar Mountain in southern California. The Soviets were working on a larger telescope, but that wouldn’t open for a few more years. But now both these telescopes are almost lost in the dust of newer, far larger ones. There are so many new telescopes in planning and development that it is difficult to keep up with them. Advances in technology have made building ever-larger telescopes possible, but other advances have greatly improved what we can do with telescopes with the instruments that we use on them.

And the space program has led to great advancements too. Everyone knows about the 2.4-meter Hubble Space Telescope (HST). But the HST is so last millennium (it was launched nearly 30 years ago). If all goes as planned, in two years we will have the 6.5-meter James Webb Space Telescope in orbit. It's much larger size and more advanced instruments will far surpass the performance of the HST. But attention to these optical telescopes overshadows the many other orbiting telescopes that probe other parts of the spectrum not assessable from the ground – gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet, and infrared. The other parts of the spectrum allow astronomers to study and learn more about the many exotic objects in the universe that we couldn’t do any other way.

And then there are the many robotic spacecraft that we’ve sent to various planets, asteroids, and comets in the solar system. Some of these probes merely flew past their targets (such as the New Horizons mission to Pluto in 2015), but others have landed on various bodies (such as the various rovers on Mars and the Philae spacecraft that landed on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 2014). Fifty years ago, it was easy to keep up with what spacecraft were about to be launched or were en route to their destinations. But now I can’t keep track of what’s going on, and I’m regularly caught off guard by the announcement of some launch or discovery of a mission that I was at best vaguely aware of. Isn’t technology great?

What is driving all this exploration of the universe? It can’t be practical application, such as new medical advancements in curing disease or improved products, because, let’s face it, astronomy isn’t very practical. The answer lies in the fact that there is much more to science than just practicality. At its core, science is about the pursuit of knowledge just for knowledge’s sake. For instance, the founding document of modern physics and astronomy is Sir Isaac Newton’s Principia. There isn’t a whit of practical application in it. Rather, Newton was driven to pursue his study simply to answer some fundamental questions about the world, such as what was the force that caused the moon to orbit the earth each month. Along the way, Newton invented physics and calculus, which opened the door to all sorts of things worth knowing, both very practical and perhaps not so practical. One never knows where this raw pursuit of knowledge might lead. And many things, such as art and music, are worth having, just because we enjoy them. In many respects, astronomy is more similar to art and music than to other science.

But this recognition jumps over the fact that man is a curious creature. Why is man so curious about the world around him? The naturalistic worldview has no answer to that question – it’s just the way man is. But the biblical worldview has the answer. Our desire to interact with and understand the world around us may be part of the image of God in which we are created (Genesis 1:26-27), but it may have more to do with our commission to fill, subdue, and rule over the earth (Genesis 1:28). At Camp Infinity we strive to foster that God-given curiosity about the world in the proper context. It is our desire that our campers learn to understand and appreciate or Creator in a much more meaningful way through our unique ministry. We hope that at least a few of our campers will find their calling in glorifying God through their profession that is related to STEM.

Spring 2019 Newsletter

Big Changes for Camp Infinity

Introducing the Ci 6.0 Counselors

Exciting Upgrades at the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter

Cincinnati Museum Center Reopens for 2019

Why Did We Choose The Human Body for Our Ci 6.0 Theme?

Trust in Lord and He Will Direct Your Paths

Are We There Yet? (Proverbs 16:9)

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5–6)

As a young man, I learned these verses and believed them, but one of the great joys of living life is watching the truths we know come to life. These verses became vividly true after I moved my family from Alaska to Kentucky and started my new job as a handyman in Georgetown, KY in 2015. Shortly after beginning this job, I was driving home and received a text informing me I was laid off.

As I sat at a stoplight, stunned by this turn of events, I was immediately concerned about what I would do for work. But my trust in the Lord reassured me that my only job was to do whatever work the Lord brought to me. I’m not to worry about where the work would come from. At that stoplight, I asked the Lord for what he would have me do next.

Hearing no voice from heaven, I took the only action I knew and that was to ask, seek, and knock. So instead of going home, I began passing out business cards and looking for whatever opportunity God would direct me to next. I trusted that God could do something that day.

After several hours of passing out business cards and nothing happening, I finally went home to my eight kids, unsure of what tomorrow would hold. After arriving home, I realized we needed diapers and groceries. Rather than leaving everyone again after being away all day, I asked my wife if we could all go and soon we were walking up and down the aisles of Costco, filling the cart with everything we needed.

As we headed back to the van to unload the groceries, a middle-aged man approached our van saying he couldn’t help but notice our family as we had both entered the store at the same moment, he had seen us several times while he shopped, and we had checked out at the same time. He just “happened“ to have parked three cars away from us and when he had exited the store he saw me again and decided to talk to me.

He said, “It’s not common to see families with lots of children these days and your children were so well behaved in the store. I just wanted to come up and encourage you and say good job dad for having lots of kids and having such well-behaved kids. Keep up the good work!” After I thanked him for his encouragement, the words “well it was nice meeting you” were right on the tip of my tongue, when I suddenly stopped and remembered it was still today. Every single event of that day had led up to the very small 10-second window of whom we had walked in front of as we entered the store. So instead I asked him what he did for work and found out he was the project manager for the Ark Encounter, which was currently under construction. I was shocked because I had wanted to work there. When I told him that, and what I did for a living, he told me his vice president had told him that morning to find a guy just like me to hire!

I began working on the Ark Encounter January, 2016 and stayed there through the opening on July 7, 2016. Now, what I ended up doing there is another amazing story for another time, but I can now say from the experiential side: “trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” And again: “a man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps. Trust in the Lord!”

I look forward to seeing you all this year at Ci 6.0!

Spring 2019 Newsletter

Big Changes for Camp Infinity

Introducing the Ci 6.0 Counselors

Exciting Upgrades at the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter

Cincinnati Museum Center Reopens for 2019

Why Did We Choose The Human Body for Our Ci 6.0 Theme?

Trust in Lord and He Will Direct Your Paths

Are We There Yet? Each theme must be relevant in terms of STEM and have a direct tie-in to apologetics (faith-defense), biblical worldview, and what’s happening in our culture and in science. We take something that has been grossly misrepresented in our culture through false or inaccurate scientific claims and look at it through the lens of Scripture.

Our 2019 theme for our sixth camp is the human body. With the increase in biological and machine interfaces, as well as a society that is becoming more willing to kill innocent babies for stem cell research, CRISPR gene editing research, and other research technologies, we wanted a theme that would allow us to touch on those topics from a biblical perspective, as well as give glory to God for what he has made and understand stewardship as it relates to our own bodies.

While we believe technology exists to help us fight against the immediate effects of the curse, we know technology will never provide a permanent answer to the curse. That answer is only found in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Yet our culture today worships science and technology as the savior of mankind from death. For example, a hospital near the Creation Museum airs a radio commercial with the tagline, “In science lives hope.” Science is seen as our only hope and the answer to our biggest problems. That perspective is an affront to the gospel.

We also believe nothing demonstrates the amazing creativity and even engineering mindset of our God then does the human creation. Being made in the image of God is one of the most profound, complex, and amazing parts of the entire creation. This doctrine has profound implications for science and how we should conduct our research (a field of science and philosophy known as bioethics) and we need a generation of researchers who understand the sanctity of human life.

Spring 2019 Newsletter

Big Changes for Camp Infinity

Introducing the Ci 6.0 Counselors

Exciting Upgrades at the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter

Cincinnati Museum Center Reopens for 2019

Why Did We Choose The Human Body for Our Ci 6.0 Theme?

Trust in Lord and He Will Direct Your Paths

Are We There Yet? In previous years, Ci has taken campers to the Cincinnati Museum Center, a massive museum located in a beautiful old train station, Union Terminal, in Cincinnati. But in 2016 they closed for renovations, so we have been taking campers to the museum at Big Bone Lick State Park instead.

These museum tours serve as part of our competing worldviews teaching. We highlight how the same evidence is presented at both the Creation Museum and a secular science museum but two completely different interpretations are reached because of two very different worldviews.

The Cincinnati Museum Center has now reopened so Ci 6.0 campers will be touring that facility this summer. Here are some of the new upgrades they can expect to see during their time there:

Science Interactives Gallery. This gallery gets hands-on with science. Play giant tug-of-war, hoist a pulley to get yourself 11 feet into the air, create your own clouds, and knock down targets with air cannons as you learn about physics through the integration of STEM.

New Dino Hall. You’ll see rare dinosaurs not found in other museums around the world, including Torvosaurus and Galeamopus. An interactive globe supposedly shows how continents have shifted over the past 600 million years and another exhibit highlights the alleged similarities between birds and dinosaurs. This exhibit will certainly spark great discussion with our campers!

Volcanos: Fires of Creation. A new OMNIMAX Theater program is now showing at the Cincinnati Museum Center. You’ll venture into the crater of a volcano, close enough to feel the heat of the magma. Did these volcanos help shape our world? This show will highlight the vast differences in worldview and interpretation between those who start with the Bible and those who don’t.

Spring 2019 Newsletter

Big Changes for Camp Infinity

Introducing the Ci 6.0 Counselors

Exciting Upgrades at the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter

Cincinnati Museum Center Reopens for 2019

Why Did We Choose The Human Body for Our Ci 6.0 Theme?

Trust in Lord and He Will Direct Your Paths

Are We There Yet? Much of our camp takes place at the Creation Museum and our overnight camps also tour the nearby Ark Encounter. Since Ci 5.0 some things have changed at both attractions and we looked forward to experiencing these new upgrades with our campers:

4D Special Effects Theater. The Creation Museum now has a spectacular, totally refurbished 4D theater. It features the latest in 3D technology—including infrared 3D glasses—as well as special effects such as rumbling seats, wind, and more. The theater currently shows In Six Days, a 3D animation of the days of creation.

Answers Center. The Ark Encounter is now host to a 2,500 seat multi-purpose auditorium with a massive 20-foot by 10-foot LED screen. The technology is state-of-the-art and this building will feature daily presentations, movies, and events such as conferences and concerts.

Zoo Expansion. The Ark Encounter is also expanding their zoo to include a walk-through kangaroo and emu exhibit, sloths, mountain goats, peccaries, and more. No date has been announced for the zoo opening but regardless Ci campers will enjoy meeting camels, ostriches, Tibetan yaks, kangaroos, llamas, and much more.

Children’s Adventure Area. The Creation Museum now features a brand-new playground that has been designed by experts to be inclusive of all children, including those with disabilities. It’s been very popular with kids of all ages and our younger campers are sure to enjoy it. The playground even has its own zipline!

Spring 2019 Newsletter

Big Changes for Camp Infinity

Introducing the Ci 6.0 Counselors

Exciting Upgrades at the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter

Cincinnati Museum Center Reopens for 2019

Why Did We Choose The Human Body for Our Ci 6.0 Theme?

Trust in Lord and He Will Direct Your Paths

Are We There Yet? We’re excited to meet our 2019 campers and thought we’d start the introductions now by letting you get to know our Ci 6.0 counselors.

Nathan Dwire

I am a Freshman Zoo and Wildlife Biology major at Bob Jones University. I am very excited about the opportunity to serve at such a unique camp this summer. I can’t wait to help my campers learn more about STEM and about their Creator. This camp’s position of teaching STEM from a Christian worldview provides a great opportunity to learn how to live in a world that often sees science and religion as unreconcilable. I look forward to the role I get to play in teaching future Christian STEM leaders!

Anne-Mrea Fariss

During the summer before my Sophomore year of high school, the Lord began burdening my heart for creation ministry. I am thankful for His guidance to Camp Infinity. I completely support the mission of Ci and love the way they teach a biblical worldview alongside STEM. The campers who attend Ci are the next generations of STEM leaders and will serve as missionaries in our culture. I have such a passion to reach these children and teens with the truth and to help them be confident in their faith despite the convincing lies they are taught in school. I am so excited to work with each of you and to reach out to the campers that the Lord brings.

Alan Pillow

I am excited to experience Camp Infinity for the first time as a counselor! Being part of this team is a huge blessing. My dad raised me with a love for biblical logic and creation science. When I began truly seeking the Lord two years ago, I began to feel burdened for the generation that is being taught to compromise biblical authority by their teachers and peers. Needless to say, I was thrilled to find out about a camp that teaches STEM to students through a biblical lens, and I'm even more thrilled to play a part in this ministry! I pray that God is raising up a generation that loves STEM and loves Jesus, as we were created to do.

Steven Platt

Hello, all! I am a Sophomore Computer Engineering major at Bob Jones University. I am greatly looking forward to learning more about God through His creation this summer with the campers! Throughout my teenage years, God gave me a passion for solving problems using the fields of math and technology. Counseling at Camp Infinity provides an amazing opportunity for me to share my love for the fields of STEM through the lens of Scripture! I love working with young people, and I am excited to help campers explore science and strengthen their relationship with God. I am praying that God will use this summer to draw us closer to Him as we explore His creation.

Robert Ring

Camp Infinity has now been a part of my life for almost five years. As a high school student, the camp ministered to me both intellectually and biblically and allowed for connections with other like-minded young men and women. My time at camp strengthened my faith in God and pointed me in the direction I currently pursue. I am currently studying Electrical Engineering at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. It is this impact that the camp made on me that I wanted to return to the next generation. In 2017, God blessed me by allowing me to return to Camp Infinity as a counselor. I have many wonderful memories both of campers and what God taught. That year also provided me with the opportunity to write for the camp's growing website. I have since returned as a counselor in 2018 and will now be serving for my third year this coming summer. God has used Camp Infinity mightily in my own life and in the lives of others. I am humbled that I have been given the opportunity to give a little of that back. It is with this in mind that I march toward the summer and pray fervently for God to work in the hearts of my future campers.

Isaac Slayton

Hello there! I am a bit of the odd ball out as I am a Junior Biblical Counseling major at Bob Jones University. Despite not being a computer science major, I have years of practical experience in the IT Department at BJU and I have mentored at several STEM and Robotics Summer Camps over the years. While this will be my first year serving at Camp Infinity, I have been familiar with it since I was in high school. It has been neat to see how God has guided me to this service opportunity. I look forward to impacting many people this summer in regards to both technology and the Gospel.

Brooklyn Summerlin

I have been blessed to be a part of Camp Infinity's mission since its humble beginning. Attending Ci played a huge part in my decision to pursue a Middle School Science Education degree at Bob Jones University. I was able to attend Ci's very first Counselor in Training program which opened my eyes to the incredible need for a biblical impact on youth in the science field. I am excited to be able to make this impact through Camp Infinity.

Ana Moran (counselor and photography)

I've always loved the science field ever since I was young. I always thought that I would be a dentist. My plans have changed since then, as currently I am a Health Science Major with a minor in Computer Science. Over the past few years I've discovered a new passion through different opportunities the Lord has given me. I love teaching and helping with children. I knew God wanted me to use this summer to serve in some capacity, although I didn't know where. By his providence, I learned about Camp Infinity. What better place to use the desires and skills God has granted me! I'm so excited to meet every one of the campers and be able to share my passion for science with them!

Justin Sutherland (technology specialist)

I am a Junior IT major at Bob Jones University. I have a passion for technology and for using technology to solve problems. I first started working with Camp Infinity last year with some of their robotics workshops and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was the highlight of my whole year! The Lord has since led me to intern at Camp Infinity this summer. Camp Infinity gives me an awesome opportunity to not only share my passion for technology with others, but also use it to point others to Christ!

Spring 2019 Newsletter

Big Changes for Camp Infinity

Introducing the Ci 6.0 Counselors

Exciting Upgrades at the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter

Cincinnati Museum Center Reopens for 2019

Why Did We Choose The Human Body for Our Ci 6.0 Theme?

Trust in Lord and He Will Direct Your Paths

Are We There Yet? This news is both exciting and bittersweet, but we trust it is the Lord’s leading and it will be the beginning of an incredible new chapter in the history of Camp Infinity.

Here’s the big news: Dan Wooster, the founder of Ci and the director for the past five years, has made the very difficult decision to step down as director. Living in Greenville, South Carolina, while directing a camp in Northern Kentucky, as well as hosting mobile and mini camps around the country, has demanded hundreds of hours of Dan’s time (much of which has been spent in a car!). He has loved directing Ci—and has done an amazing job—but is looking forward to spending time with his wife and growing number of grandchildren. Dan will still be involved with the camp but has handed his directing duties over to our interim director, Ben Torkelson.

Before we introduce Ben to everyone, we here at Ci want to stop and thank Dan for the incredible sacrifices he has made to build Ci to what it is today. His passion for young people, STEM, and God’s Word and the gospel is unmistakable. He has guided Ci for the past five years with such dedication and passion, winning the hearts of parents and supporters along the way. He will be greatly missed by all this summer.

Now, to introduce you to Ben. He was born and raised in Alaska and spent much of his growing up years attending Christian camps, including counseling at Solid Rock Bible Camp in 1997. He eventually went into construction and in 2014 moved to Northern Kentucky and helped build the Ark Encounter (the incredible story of how he began working on the full-size Noah’s ark is featured here in this newsletter).

Ben has been working with Camp Infinity for the past three years as our camper chaplain, as well as a tour guide at the Ark. He is passionate about preaching and seeing young people grow in faith and love. He also loves using technology to reveal God’s brilliance and creativity. Ben is married to Jenny and has 10 wonderful children, ages six months through 12 years.

Please join with us this summer in welcoming Ben as the interim director.

Spring 2019 Newsletter

Big Changes for Camp Infinity

Introducing the Ci 6.0 Counselors

Exciting Upgrades at the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter

Cincinnati Museum Center Reopens for 2019

Why Did We Choose The Human Body for Our Ci 6.0 Theme?

Trust in Lord and He Will Direct Your Paths

Are We There Yet? We will greatly miss Dan’s leadership.

At the same time, we are pleased to announce Ben Torkelson as interim director of Camp Infinity. Ben has extensive experience with camp ministry in his native Alaska. And Ben is no stranger to Camp Infinity, having helped in our summer programs the past four years. Ben is quite familiar with Answers in Genesis, the Creation Museum, and the Ark Encounter, which have been a focus of camp activities. Since our summer programs are in northern Kentucky, it is a plus to have a resident of the area as our interim director. During the transition, Ben will be working with Camp Infinity related events this spring. Welcome aboard, Ben.
andrewsdave20@gmail.com (Camp Infinity)Fri, 12 Apr 2019 14:48:20 +0000http://campinfinity.com/blog/2019/04/12/meet-our-new-director/Is Teaching Creation a “Huge Disservice” to Students and the Sciences? http://campinfinity.com/blog/2019/02/17/teaching-creation-huge-disservice-students-and-sciences/
Want to stir up some controversy? Post about science, God, and the Bible on social media! Recently I posted a blog that Ken Ham, CEO of Answers in Genesis, kindly wrote about Camp Infinity on our Facebook page. He wrote:

A recent article by a secular blogger claimed that children who aren’t taught evolution won’t get that spark of interest that propels them to become scientists. Well, at Answers in Genesis we don’t believe that you need to be taught and believe evolution in order to be passionate about discovering more about what God has made. And this certainly bears true throughout history—many of the greatest scientists of all time were Christians who studied nature for God’s glory (and many of them lived at the time of Darwin)! We want more scientists like that.

The phrase I put in bold particularly attracted attention and I thought I would respond to some of the negative feedback this blog post received. One Facebook user replied to Ken’s blog with this statement:

Geologists, paleontologists, astronomers, biologists of all branches, and most scientists in the medical profession use information and concepts gained from the study of evolution in their work. These people who are exposed to false science will either not choose these sciences as careers or become so disillusioned with the theories taught in Universities that they will drop out or transfer to other disciplines. That would be a huge disservice to both the students and those sciences that need young professionals to advance their field of study for the benefit of all mankind. (emphasis added)

What this user fails to recognize is that there are many scientists who study science from a biblical worldview and there are also over 1,000 scientists—many of whom are not creationists—who question evolutionary ideas. When it comes to observational science (more on that below) what you believe about origins has little to no direct impact on how you do your science. For example, this commenter mentions the medical field. Medicine and evolution have very little to do with one another as medicine works, studies, and practices in the present in a testable, repeatable way while evolution deals with the past and is not directly testable, observable, or repeatable.

Evolution Holds Back Science

Indeed, on the few occasions evolution has been applied to medicine it has held science back! The debunked (but still repeated!) idea of vestigial organs (that certain organs are useless leftovers from evolution) held back research because no one bothered to figure out what the appendix, and other organs, did because they were considered useless evolutionary leftovers. We’ve now found important uses for every single “vestigial” organ in our bodies.

Another example is so-called “junk” DNA. The areas of the DNA that do not code for proteins—about 98%—were considered leftovers from our evolutionary past and were largely ignored. Recently research is showing that this “junk” has important regulatory functions. Evolution has actually held back science and medicine!

Most sciences have nothing to do with evolutionary ideas and children, and young adults, do not need to believe in evolution in order to have a successful science career. One example of a creation scientist doing great science is Dr. Raymond Damadian, the inventor of the MRI. He has spoken to our Ci campers before and also filmed a brief clip that was played during the Ken Ham and Bill Nye, “the Science Guy,” debate in 2014 about his work.

Only Use the Scientific Method?

Another commenter claimed that only results determined through the scientific method should be taught. If that is the case, then all evolutionary ideas must be thrown out. Evolution is not testable, repeatable, or observable. You can’t directly test, observe, or repeat the past so you cannot use the scientific method when it comes to evolutionary ideas.

Above I mentioned observational science and said I would get into more detail. Well, observational science is the kind of science that is directly testable, observable, and repeatable. It’s the kind of science that put man on the moon, develops vaccines and other medical advances, and continues to improve AI (artificial intelligence). Both creationists and evolutionists can do this science with little disagreement.

Historical science is very different. It deals with the past (fossils, rocks, etc.) and is therefore not directly testable, observable, or repeatable so what you believe about the past will determine how you interpret the evidence. The worldview (long ages or a young earth, evolution or special creation) that you come to the evidence with becomes the lens through which you look at the world. That’s why creationists and evolutionists can both look at the same evidence and come to completely different conclusions.

Do Creationists Publish?

Another person claimed no creationist has even published a paper regarding creation science. Well, that is demonstrably untrue. Creationists frequently publish in journals such as Answers Research Journal, Creation Research Society Quarterly, and others. Some would argue that, since these are creation publications, that somehow “doesn’t count,” even though papers are all peer-reviewed by other scientists in the field. But that merely reveals the bias of the person making that argument.

Furthermore, creationists would willingly and gladly submit their research to a secular journal for consideration but anything that even so much as mentions a Creator or any hint of a biblical worldview is immediately reject out of hand, making such a thing impossible.

No “Creation Related Evidence” Used for “Real Scientific Work”?

I believe most evolutionists make claims like the following comment because they are ignorant of creationist literature.

And not a one of those creationist believing scientists use any created related evidence for their real scientific work basically because there isn’t an creation based evidence to use.

The many creation scientists working in their fields would beg to differ! For example, Dr. Nathaniel Jeanson, who holds a PhD from Harvard, is currently studying mutations rates in human DNA and seeking to determine if he can trace historical events, such as the slave trade, in our DNA, with promising results. His research starts with the belief that our DNA is young and therefore we should be able to read history in our DNA.

Back in the 1980’s Dr. Russel Humphreys accurately predicted the strength of the magnetic fields of Uranus and Neptune before they were known, starting with his belief that their magnetic fields had only been decaying since creation, a few thousand years ago.

Dr. Andrew Snelling, a geologist, is currently studying rock layers from the Grand Canyon that have been folded onto one another to determine how this happened. His research, which will be published when it is finished, is pointing towards rapid folding when the layers (which are supposedly separated by millions of years) were all still soft.

And these are just a few examples of creationists doing real scientific work, starting with the history in the Bible as their foundation.

Do Your Research!

These accusations lobbied against creation are simply unfounded. I would encourage those who made those comments to look into the work of creationists to find out what we actually believe and how our worldview explains the evidence. A great place to start is with The New Answers Book 1, which is available to read for free (or to purchase) on the AnswersinGenesis.org website.

Want to join the conversation happening on social media? I decided to look him up and see what earned his farm recognition to this day and discovered this man had invented a machine that revolutionized American history.

What machine was invented in the 1830s that would forever change America? The mechanical reaper. McCormick, at the age of 22, took over an invention his father had been tinkering with. He wanted to design something that would make bringing in the crops much less labor intensive. Currently it took a whole team of men (in the South in 1830 that meant a team of slaves) to bring in a crop. But McCormick’s reaper revolutionized harvesting and allowed the work of twelve men to be done by the reaper instead. McCormick found it a hard sell in Virginia so he moved to Chicago and sold thousands of his reapers to men across the Midwest with a lot of land and not enough people to harvest its bounty.

McCormick was made a member of the French Academy of Science "as having done more for agriculture than any other living man." He allowed farmers to grow vast quantities of crops and bring them in within a timely manner.

But his invention had another unintended effect. His reaper increased the wealth and power of the Northern states and allowed them to have food to feed their troops during the Civil War. It also freed up men to go and fight since they were no longer needed to bring in the harvest. Surely this contributed to the North’s victory over the South.

Additionally, his machine replaced multiple workers needed to harvest crops.

McCormick’s invention, which is still used today (though no longer pulled by horses), helped fight against the “thrones and thistles” of the Curse by allowing farmers to bring in more crops with less effort so more people could be fed. It’s an invention that changed America, helped win a war, and may have even contributed to freeing people from slavery! That’s an example of technology used for the good of mankind.
dan@campinfinity.com (Camp Infinity)Mon, 04 Feb 2019 16:44:26 +0000http://campinfinity.com/blog/2019/02/04/1830s-invention-revolutionized-america/Technology
