Science & Economics of Genetically Modified Seeds
Using STEM to carry out the Creation Mandate
I love spending time here in the cornfields of central Ohio. My most recent trip I received an education on the science and economics of GMO seeds (genetically modified organisms). I smell a future Ci camp program in the works!!
Here's a simple overview of how it all works:
The positive side of the story:
- Seed companies learned how to make seeds that were resistant to herbicides (a.k.a., RoundUp) and insects.
- They applied for and received patents to protect their discovery.
- Farmers saw an economic benefit to using GMO seeds.
Now the twist:
- The bugs and the weeds adapted. This happens from natural selection, and is very observable, unlike molecules-to-man Evolution which has no factual basis in science.
- Chemical companies gained control over GMO seed.
- Countries, like Japan, refuse to buy GMO crops - economics 101 kicks in - supply and demand drives prices down.
This is an excellent example of STEM synergy. This synergy occurs when a scenario housed in the content of science, in this case genetics, uses the language of mathematics, in this case economics, to communicate causation through the application of technologies with the designing principles in engineering. For more details on this synergy,
read this blog from one of the members of our board of advisors, Dr Jeremy Ervin.
At Ci, we believe STEM provides an excellent platform on which to carry out the Creation Mandate as given in Genesis 1:18 (God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”) and Genesis 2:15 (The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to till it and keep it.)
I love studying the challenges of carrying out the Creation Mandate in a fallen world. This is why Ci offers inspiring camp programs in STEM built upon a strong biblical apologetic framework. Teaching young people how to think critically within a STEM & biblical framework is what Camp Infinity is all about. Explore our line up of programs for this summer.
