GPS is one of the technologies we have highlighted at Ci in the past. Here’s how it works, according to Garmin, a major producer of GPS systems: GPS relies on information from highly precise satellites in orbit around the Earth to track the exact location of the user. The satellites send information to GPS receivers, which compare the time the signal left the satellite with the time it reached the GPS receiver. The more satellites the GPS can contact, the more accurate the information, but it must contact at least three. Using the information from all three (or more) satellites the GPS can define your exact position on the globe with a high degree of accuracy. Once this has been established, the satellite is programed to be able to calculate other pertinent information such as speed, trip distance, and arrival time. And all of this happens quickly and simply at the press of a button, or a voice command, from the user.
I experienced the positive impact of GPS technology recently. I was heading into Nashville for a weekend homeschool conference where I was presenting workshops on robots and a biblical perspective on STEM. Suddenly as I was zipping along the interstate, my GPS notified me that there was a serious accident just a few miles ahead. That immediately pulled me out of my normal “driving daze” that I fall into while listening to music, so I was prepared when I came upon the sudden traffic jam. Had I not been alerted to this event only the Lord knows what the result could've been. This is another every day example of how technology helps us fight against the immediate effects of the curse. Of course, no technology will ever free us from the Curse. That’s why we need to be reminded that God’s permanent solution for the Curse is found in Jesus Christ. Because of His death in our place and His triumphant Resurrection from the grave, for those who believe in Him, there will come a day when “there will no longer be any Curse” (Revelation 22:3). And what a day that will be!
These are the kinds of truths that young people learn at Ci. As they discover more about God’s creation they are consistently reminded about what God’s Word (the only 100% accurate GPS for life!) says, and about the hope we have through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
