Technology and Creativity

One thing technology allows us to do is express our creativity.

Computer programs help artists create something beautiful, cameras capture moments in time or allow directors, actors, and producers to work together to make a production, recording equipment preserves the talent of musicians, and 3D modeling helps architects and designers plan buildings. Even the process of inventing technology is an outlet of creativity. Creation displays God’s creativity and, as image bearers of the Creator, it's no surprise humans are incredibly creative.

These guys rigged a drone to carry a useable, running chainsaw (not something I recommend kids try at home!)—maybe not the most practical application but definitely creative and cool to watch! Other (more practical) drone uses include search and rescue, aerial photography, package delivery, mapping, surveying, inspections, security, scientific research, and surveillance. There are dozens of practical ways that drones can be used to make our lives easier as we attempt to “have dominion” (Genesis 1:28) over the earth and fight against the immediate effects of the Curse. As drone technology is further perfected we can only expect more creative uses for the invention.

During some of our camps this year we introduced our students to drones and the technology behind them. As you might imagine they were very excited about this and they had a great time exploring this new technology.

We purchased half a dozen drones for the camp and during our pre-camp counselor training sessions we let them practice flying the machines. After one drone disappeared into the woods, never to be seen again, we elected a few counselors who had experience with drones to design a test that the user must pass before he or she could handle the drone on his/her own.

They designed an obstacle course using PVC pipe and hula hoops that the campers had to learn to fly the drone through. If they could master the obstacle course, they could control the drone on their own. Only a few students mastered the difficult art of handling a drone but everyone had fun trying to conquer the course. During their free time many of the campers came back to the course to practice and perfect their skills.
