Concerned About Safety at Camp Infinity? Get the Facts!

I recently had a phone conversation with a mom from Indiana who was considering sending her inquisitive nine-year-old to one of our camps this summer. As many moms rightfully are, she was concerned about the physical safety of her little girl while away from home at camp. We had a great conversation and I was able to put her mind at ease by explaining the training and precautions we take at Camp Infinity (Ci)—at the end of our conversation, she decided to enroll her daughter.

My assistant, Emily Barney, handles safety at Ci. And, let me tell you, as the mother of two boys, she takes safety seriously. In addition to her vital role at Ci, Emily is the Children’s Ministry Director at her local church, which has over 300 children in attendance, so she has plenty of practice with safety and safety training.

This year we have fourteen camp counselors, all of whom must complete and pass background checks before they can work with the kids. Before camp begins they go through a week of training which includes doing all the activities the campers will be doing, learning to answer questions, and taking child safety training which is based out of the well-known From Darkness to Light curriculum.

Here are some examples of the safety precautions we take at Ci:

  • Campers are divided into groups; girls with girls, and boys with boys.
  • During lunch and teaching times with Answers in Genesis’ speakers, all of the groups come together but the students are always under the supervision of multiple counselors and staff members.
  • During the walk-through of the Creation Museum, the Ark Encounter tour, and the hands-on STEM activities the campers remain in their groups; girls with girls, and boys with boys.
  • Counselors will check to ensure a restroom is clear before allowing the student to enter and will remain outside the door to wait for the student. Counselors never enter the restroom with a student and, if someone else comes along to use the restroom, the counselor will kindly point them to a different facility they can use.
  • There is always a designated, and very public, spot to meet in the very unlikely event a camper is separated from his or her group.
  • Both the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter have excellent public safety staff who respond almost instantly to any problem (when I broke my ankle at the Creation Museum a few months ago, public safety personnel had a wheelchair at my side within 45 seconds).

Rest assured, moms and dads, your child is in a very safe environment at Ci. During one of our summer camps, your child will have a fun-filled week of apologetics and biblical training coupled with plenty of hands-on STEM learning. It’s a combination you won’t find anywhere else!
