Meeting a Rocket Scientist at Ark Encounter

“In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.” This verse from Proverbs has long been a favorite of mine. Each day I ask the Lord to direct my paths to allow me to meet the people He has chosen for that day. I firmly believe God does this. While most days are relatively normal, every now and then God brings about an amazing connection. Such was the day at the Ark Encounter when we met a real live rocket scientist! 

Having taken our summer staff to tour the Ark Encounter, we were heading to the parking lot when I noticed a guy wearing a very distinctive t-shirt. It said something that grabbed my attention so I asked if I could take a picture. He readily agreed. 

When I told him I wanted the picture to show my campers at Camp Infinity, he replied excitedly, “I’ve heard of Camp Infinity and want to send my 4 children some day!” I said, “What do you do for a living?” to which he replied, “I’m a rocket scientist.” That opened up an entire conversation about his beliefs and educational background. At Ci we believe in ministering to the entire camper - mind and spirit. So it is important we bring examples before our campers of men and women who love God, love STEM, and hold strongly to a young earth creation view. 

Jeremy McCauley was all of these. We met the next week and worked it out for him to video call in for one of our Career Nights during Ci 5.0 summer teen overnight camps. The campers loved him. He shared, among other things, how he designed a chemical lab on a chip to carry out 45 different experiments. Originally, he was told to design it to prove there is life in outer space. He came back and challenged that premise as not being accurate for scientific exploration. The mission was changed to prove whether or NOT life exists in outer space. It is exciting to know there are modern day Daniels, like Jeremy, to whom God has given academic talents and also a strong desire to stand up against our culture and proclaim, “this is what God’s Word says, and I believe it!”

One other cool thing Jeremy shared with our campers was that he designed a component on a satellite that orbits Mars collecting scientific data. He was tasked with the job of making sure the component was properly mounted on the launch pad before taking off from the Kennedy Space Center, an event he and his family were invited to enjoy.
